Depending on who you ask, Lorandris is either a villainous hive of murderous, pillaging scum or it's the last true bastion of freedom in an increasingly restricted world. They'd both be right. Lorandris is a very loose alliance between a few extra-continental enclaves -- people "removed" from the rest of Edan proper who have formed new settlements on the Fūlwinter coast.
In theory, Lorandris operates entirely off trade with the other countries, providing ships and bulk transport where Fenrith might not. In practice, Lorandris' biggest economic center is piracy. Raiding parties of Lorandrin pirates trawl the coasts for undefended port towns and capture improperly defended cargo vessels at sea. With the advent of airframes, pirate crews have taken to raiding inland -- massive ships called skybreakers land, pillage, and return to the skies before the local governments can catch up.
Truthfully, for as perfectly as they've honed their craft, Lorandris is a small country. If the others on Edan really wanted to be rid of their piracy, most any other country could swiftly topple Lorandris. The only reason the country still stands is because the others need them. Or, more accurately, they need their shipyards. Lorandrin ships are faster, can carry more cargo, can take way more abuse, and, in some cases, can turn invisible. Simply, no other country has the shipbuilding know-how to best a Lorandrin vessel, so every country buys from them.
Natives to Lorandris all work building, sailing, or sinking ships. Mere Lorandrin citizenship is a felony in other countries, so when traveling in different countries, a Lorandrin will likely deflect their country of origin.
From Estañion's Selection of Sea Shanties, p. 56.
Oh, we sail on ships that the storms can’t break,
With decks that groan but never quake.
From the Fūlwinter coast to the Edan shore,
We take what’s ours and then take more.
So hoist the black, let the cannons sing,
To the Pirate Kings, our voices ring!
We’re the wolves of the waves, the scourge of the sea,
Forever we’ll sail, Lorandris free!
With a skybreaker’s shadow, we descend from high,
Your gold, your grain—don’t bother to try.
For the fools who stand, we’ve steel and flame,
But the smart ones live to curse our name.
So hoist the black, let the cannons sing,
To the Pirate Kings, our voices ring!
We’re the wolves of the waves, the scourge of the sea,
Forever we’ll sail, Lorandris free!
We build the ships that the winds obey,
With cunning craft and hands of clay.
The world can hate, but they’ll still need we,
The masters of the boundless sea.
So hoist the black, let the cannons sing,
To the Pirate Kings, our voices ring!
We’re the wolves of the waves, the scourge of the sea,
Forever we’ll sail, Lorandris free!
